Using a descriptive method, it reviews the Modern Language Aptitude Test (MLAT), the Pimsleur Language Aptitude Battery (PLAB), the online MLAT, the elementary MLAT, and its Spanish version. The study identifies the abilities those instruments seek to measure, then develops a proposed framework informed by those tests and by Arabic sound, derivational morphology, vocabulary, syntax, and literacy.
An initial set of 32 criteria was submitted to specialists in Arabic teaching, curriculum, and assessment. After merging, removing, and refining criteria, the study arrived at 17 across five domains: phonetic coding, phonetic sensitivity, vocabulary and spelling, grammatical sensitivity, and memory. These domains became a detailed 200-item proposal weighted most heavily toward grammatical analysis and phonetic coding.
The principal contribution is a design framework: explicit criteria, Arabic-aware task families, a scoring allocation, and psychological, linguistic, cultural, and educational safeguards. The thesis does not report a learner pilot, reliability estimates, predictive accuracy, norms, or cut scores. It therefore supports future experimental validation—not immediate high-stakes deployment.

A responsible reading
Established in the thesis: a comparative review, a five-domain construct map, 17 expert-reviewed criteria, Arabic-specific task proposals, a 200-item scoring plan, and a set of safeguards for administration and interpretation.
Still to be established: learner performance, reliability, construct and predictive validity, accessibility, cross-language fairness, useful score interpretations, norms, and decision thresholds.
Editorial note: the final scoring table consistently specifies 200 items across 18 task blocks. A separate passage calls the design 16 questions, and one passage reverses the two memory-task labels. These details should be harmonized before a pilot.
