Following the Recitation: Space and Time on Screen
The thesis’s measured examples show why subtitle length alone cannot explain display duration, while a closer reading reveals what those measurements can—and cannot—establish.
Measuring the presentation
The technical part of Ameerah Dana’s master’s thesis turns from linguistic interpretation to what viewers actually see and hear. It examines subtitle position, screen area, line and character counts, font treatment, and display duration. The material comes from selected online and television examples collected between 25 October 2014 and 30 December 2015.
The method combines screenshots with video and audio analysis. The thesis uses Subtitle Workshop to calculate character counts, show/hide times, and duration, Microsoft Publisher to estimate screen proportions, and Audacity to compare recitation waveforms. These methods describe features of the selected material. They do not measure reading speed, attention, or comprehension in an audience.
Two tables provide particularly useful evidence: ten selected screenshots in the layout table and fifteen entries in the timing table. Those are the denominators for the reported observations, not a count of all videos, channels, or viewers. The full set of numbered illustrations also includes waveform displays, so it should not be treated as a sample of independent viewing sessions.

More lines, and a range of placements
The layout analysis finds subtitles at different heights and in different proportions of the screen, including variation within a single named channel. In Table 1, seven of the ten selected examples use three English lines. The thesis reports that only one of the ten meets the combined line-count and character-length conventions used in its comparison.
The relevant comparators are the historical one- or two-line and roughly 35–40-character guidance discussed through Schwarz and Karamitroglou. They are not presented here as current requirements for every platform. The measurements show departures in these examples; they cannot establish how common such departures are across all Qur’anic media.
The author connects some spatial expansion with the desire to preserve meaning and with the comparatively static backgrounds in some examples. But extra time or a still background does not itself prove that a dense subtitle is easy to read. Character totals also require care: the first row lists 50, 46, and 46 characters but prints a total of 132 rather than 142. The line-count observation does not depend on that erroneous total.

The image can still matter
The thesis considers contrast in context. Dark text may remain visible against a light, static background even when it differs from the pale lettering favoured by the guidance under discussion. Its explanation is tied to the particular presentation, rather than a claim that one colour treatment is universally preferable.
Screenshot 21 supplies an important qualification. A solid black subtitle band obscures part of an imam in prayer. The author argues that the image carries relevant information and that covering it may be unjustified. This example prevents a blanket assumption that the visual background in Qur’anic video is always expendable.
The design implication is to assess the combined display. The translated text, the Arabic text, and the image compete for space, but their importance depends on the video’s purpose. A solution that preserves the wording while concealing a meaningful image may still fail that purpose.

Duration follows more than word count
The timing analysis links subtitle duration to the recitation, including tajwīd, and to the accompanying Arabic display. Two examples presenting Qur’an 2:73 remain on screen for approximately 12.7 and 12.9 seconds. The thesis compares their recitation waveforms and identifies similar timing in those particular recordings.
A striking comparison involves Screenshots 23 and 24. The thesis labels the first “one word,” but the reproduced image shows a sequence of isolated Arabic letters with transliterated letter names. The second displays a complete short surah in Arabic. These are different kinds of display, not a controlled comparison between a one-word English subtitle and a longer English subtitle. Keeping that distinction visible makes the evidence more informative.

From an explanation to a testable design
The timing examples support the thesis’s central explanation: the sound and its recitational structure can govern how long the accompanying text remains visible. They do not establish that all reciters take the same time, or that the longest possible display is best for comprehension. Similarity between two recordings is a local observation, not a timing law.
The study’s conclusion makes a strong claim for tajwīd-based timing, while other passages also refer to synchronization with the Arabic subtitle. A careful synthesis therefore describes recitation and the Arabic display as timing references. It does not turn the study into a universal formula for setting English reading time.
Further evaluation would need viewers: do they finish reading, follow the intended references, and understand the passage while attending to the recitation? Those are proposed next questions, not outcomes reported by this thesis. The research offers concrete cases and a purpose-based explanation from which such evaluation could begin.
